Capri Poison-free Plant & Seed Exchange
Plants, Seeds & Growing Knowledge to Share
About
The Capri Poison-free Plant & Seed Exchange, run by Ninette Tarlton, is a friendly community meeting point at the Capri Market where local gardeners can exchange plants and seeds, while sharing plant and food-growing knowledge and ideas.
Ninette particularly encourages Capri residents to grow indigenous plants that occur naturally on the Cape Peninsula and in and around Capri, to help provide habitat and refuge for indigenous pollinators, other beneficial insects and birds. Her exchange therefore includes a growing selection of locally appropriate indigenous plants, alongside other non-invasive plants.
Seeds are an important part of the exchange too. Only non-GMO, untreated and uncoated seeds from open-pollinated organic plants are exchanged, with heirloom seeds especially encouraged.
Food-crop plants are generally not offered for exchange, in support of local organic farmers, although food-crop seeds are available for exchange.
You don’t need to have something to swap every time — you’re welcome to take something and bring something along at a future market. An “exchange” record is kept for this purpose. The stall is also a place to share growing tips and stories, discuss pest-control strategies and explore topics such as seed saving and food and seed sovereignty.
The exchange forms part of Poison-free Peninsula, a people-powered movement advocating for a poison-free Cape Peninsula and alternatives to environmentally polluting synthetic chemical pesticides and fertilisers.
Bring along suitable plants, seeds or spare small pots to exchange — or simply stop by for a chat and see what’s available.
